In the early part of the 20th century Kaunas became the capital of Lithuania (Vilnius was under Polish rule). The government authorities had been moved from Vilnius to Kaunas in 1919. But Kaunas was a relatively small town in that time. The decision was made to turn Kaunas, the contemporary capital of the country, into a modern city. .New buildings of modern style had been designed and built . Kaunas became a modern city with lots of new buildings which have survived into the present.
